The 23.000 TEU containership CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEES has entered the port of Dunkirk which has never before welcomed a ship of that size.
The iconic CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEES – which is France’s largest LNG powered containership – has made it’s first port of call at Dunkirk. This is the first time that Terminal des Flandres at the Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk has been privy to an LNG powered containership of this size and scale.
The humungous 23.000 TEU containership has made its move well in time for the festive season when items of interest need to suitably make their way both to and from France.
Named after Paris’s illustrious avenue, the CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEES marks a new chapter in the country’s drive for clean energy usage within its maritime industry.
LNG or Liquified Natural Gas is regarded as the gold standard for clean energy within the entire fossil fuels spectrum. Statistics point towards as much as a 91% reduction in emissions of particulate matter along with a staggering 99% drop in release of sulfur dioxide.
Moreover, LNG powered vessels are known to emit as much as 20% less Carbon Dioxide as compared to vessels powered by traditional fuels.
These steps are expected to eventually allow the CMA CGM Group to attain its goal of being carbon neutral by the year 2050.
Currently, the group operates 7 containerships powered by LNG which are expected to grow to 26 by 2022.
