Iranian cargo ship, the MV Saviz, which has been anchored off the coast of Yemen for years, has been hit by a suspected limpet mine attack.

The Iranian Foreign ministry has confirmed that the Iranian cargo ship, MV Saviz, has been attacked. The vessel has been anchored off the coast of Yemen for years and is suspected of being an Iranian Revolutionary Guard base.

Images broadcast by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency showed parts of the ship on fire after a suspected Israeli limpet mine exploded yesterday. The attack is the most recent in a series of similar incidents over the last few months, in what analysts are calling a covert maritime war between arch-foes Israel and Iran.

Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz, has twice refused to comment on the attack, but in an interview earlier today, he said: “The state of Israel must defend itself. Every place we find an operational challenge or operational need, we will continue to act”.
