21 mariners from North Korean cargoship, Chong Bong, have been rescued by a compatriot tanker.

A North Korean tanker has saved 21 crew members from the 1989-built, 6,800-dwt cargoship, Chong Bong, after it sank in the Sea of Japan on 22nd May.

Video footage shows the vessel listing heavily to starboard 48km off Japan’s Oki Islands and then disappearing under the waves.

The ship sent a distress call and requested help from Japan’s Maritime Security Agency (MSA), reporting flooding in the hold.

The entire crew successfully took to the ship’s lifeboats and were picked up by the 1,200-dwt tanker Yu Jong 2. No injuries were reported. The MSA said it was not involved in the rescue operation.
